Find your fabric and controls

See how the bands change the room

Layered shades are also called zebra or banded shades. Two layers of sheer and opaque fabric move past one another to change the view and light. Choose the fabric for your room first, then decide whether you want manual or motorized operation.

Motorized Layered Shades

Adjust the bands or raise the shade with powered controls. It's a convenient option for high windows or several shades you want to operate together.

  • Powered light adjustment
  • Options for grouped controls
  • Suitable for hard-to-reach windows

We'll explain the power and control choices for your shade. App, voice or scheduling features depend on the motor and any additional equipment.

Room-Darkening Layered Shades

Opaque bands give you more coverage when closed, making this an option for rooms where you want less daylight.

  • Opaque fabric bands
  • More coverage in the closed position
  • Fabric choices to see at home

Some light can still enter around the edges. If a darker bedroom is your priority, we'll show you how a closed layered shade compares with an opaque roller shade.

Light-Filtering Layered Shades

Soften daylight while keeping a light fabric look at the window. Shift the bands to change how much light and view come through.

  • Soft filtered daylight
  • A choice of fabric textures
  • Adjustable band positions

We'll show you the fabric open and closed and explain how privacy changes with daylight and lighting inside the room.

A family business that helps you picture the result

Tom Shinn grew up around his family's window treatment business and founded The Shutter Factory in 2018. Our family-owned and operated team draws on three generations of industry experience when helping you choose. With layered shades, that means looking beyond a swatch to how the bands, neighboring windows and daily light work together.

Look at the shade open, closed and raised

You'll use a layered shade in different positions throughout the day. We help you understand each one, from light coming through the sheer bands to the more covered look when the bands overlap.

01

Daylight when you want it

Line up the sheer bands for a more open view, or overlap them with the opaque bands for greater coverage. Raising the shade clears the window and gathers the fabric at the top.

02

A coordinated look across windows

We look at neighboring windows together. The opening heights, fabric and headrail positions affect how the bands line up, so these details are planned before ordering.

03

The right amount of light for sleep

If you are choosing for a bedroom, tell us how dark you like it. We'll explain the coverage of each fabric and whether an opaque roller shade would better suit your needs.

Thoughtful measuring and fitting

Plan the details before the shades arrive

We measure the openings and help you choose how the shades will mount. For adjacent windows, we plan band alignment and control positions together. After installation, we check the movement and show you the open, closed and raised positions.

We'll also explain care and the warranty for your selected shades.

A few helpful answers

Questions about layered shades

Are layered shades the same as zebra shades?

Yes. Zebra, banded and layered commonly describe this alternating-band style. The two layers move past each other to change the light and view through the window.

Can I use layered shades in a bedroom?

Yes, if the fabric's privacy and light reduction suit how you sleep. Light can remain at the edges, even with opaque bands. We'll show you the difference between layered shades and opaque roller shades if a darker room matters most.

Will the bands line up across my windows?

We look at the windows together before ordering. Alignment depends on opening heights, headrail positions and the chosen fabric. We'll explain what is possible for your layout.
